Jay Johnstone died this past Saturday at age 74. Covid was listed as the cause, although it sounds as though he was in failing health and was in a nursing home at the time of his death.
He had a wandering MLB career that lasted 20 years and included stints with 8 teams, including two separate stays with the Dodgers. The first time was 1980 through a few games into the 1982 season. While there, he was a member of the 1981 World Series Champions and delivered with a pinch hit HR in game 4 against the Yankees. He would return to LA in 1985 for a 17 game stint to end his career.
Known more as a prankster, Jay wrote several books about his exploits. He fit in well with the 1980-81 Dodgers, who had several players who liked to joke around.
RIP Moon man!
